Claude Stock Analyst: The Research Prompt

Paste this prompt and Claude runs a structured analysis covering business model, moat, risks, and valuation in one pass.

Free prompt pack · copy-paste ready · built by the BrainVaultAI team

Claude is not a financial advisor. But it's a very good research assistant if you give it the right frame. Most people ask Claude 'is X a good stock' and get a useless both-sides answer. This prompt changes the frame. Instead of asking for a recommendation, this prompt asks Claude to build the analyst structure: business quality score, competitive moat assessment, valuation sanity check against historical multiples, and an explicit bear case. You do the judgment. Claude does the framework. Use this as a first-pass research tool before you read the 10-K or listen to the earnings call. It forces you to think about the right questions before you start pattern-matching on price charts. Do not use this as investment advice. Use it to know what to look for when you do your own research.

Stock analyst prompt
I want you to act as a structured equity analyst. Do not give me investment advice or a buy/sell recommendation. Give me the analytical framework. Company: [ticker and company name]
My context: [e.g., I'm researching this as a potential long-term hold / I already own it and want a fresh look / I'm comparing it to a competitor] Structure your analysis as follows: **1. Business quality (score 1-10 with reasoning)**
- Revenue model: how do they make money and how recurring is it?
- Margins: gross and operating, are they expanding, stable, or compressing?
- Capital intensity: how much do they have to spend to grow? **2. Competitive position**
- What is the actual moat, specific, not generic?
- Who is the most dangerous competitor and why?
- What could disrupt this business in 5 years? **3. Valuation sanity check**
- Current P/E, EV/EBITDA, or relevant multiple for this sector
- How does that compare to 5-year historical average?
- What growth rate is the market currently pricing in? **4. Bear case (be specific)**
- What is the most credible reason this stock underperforms over 3 years?
- What would have to go wrong for the bear case to play out? **5. What to look for in the next earnings call**
- Three specific metrics or comments that would confirm or challenge the thesis Use public information only. Flag where you're uncertain.
Bear Case Stress Test Prompt
After running the main stock analysis, paste this follow-up:

"Now steelman the bear case for [TICKER]. Assume the bull thesis is wrong. Walk through:
1. The single most likely failure mode for this business over the next 3 years.
2. What the income statement looks like if revenue growth stalls at zero for 2 years.
3. Which management claims in recent earnings calls are hardest to verify independently.
4. What the stock is worth if the market re-rates it to the median multiple for its sector.
5. What early warning signals would tell me the bear case is playing out before the stock price confirms it.

Do not hedge every point. Give me the sharpest version of the argument against owning this stock. I can weigh it myself."

This forces Claude out of confirmation mode. Most AI stock analysis defaults to the bull case.
